Our Forests — An Important Piece of our Natural Landscape

Conference Details

This year’s conference will feature topics that are relevant to woodlot owners and managers from all walks of life.  We’ve invited presenters who will capture your imagination and provide you with a range of information about managing your woodlot.  Here are some of the features of this year’s event.

Woodlot Tax Planning - Garnet L. Hewitt, Certified General Accountant, Hewitt & Young Certified General Accountants
Tax planning can be complicated, and this presentation will provide you with some excellent information about the business, financial and tax-related issues of owning and managing a woodlot. It will help you understand the income tax rules that apply to the expenses and income related to your woodlot management activities.

Wetland Management - Angus Norman, Wetland Specialist, Ministry of Natural Resources
Learn about the importance of wetlands and how they fit into the larger natural landscape and what landowners can incorporate into their management activities to protect and enhance these valuable natural features.

Healthy Woodlots - Ed Czerwinski, Ministry of Natural Resources
Our changing climate, exotic insects, encroaching urbanization and other environmental stresses are all having a negative impact on southern Ontario's forests.  Come and learn about managing and improving the health of your woodlot by taking a look at the bigger picture, not by just trying to manage your woodlot for one bug at a time.

Managing for Species at Risk To be announced
Ontario is home to nearly 40 percent of the 500+ species of fauna and flora that have been deemed species at risk in Canada.  Learn about some of the threats that affect these species and their natural habitat and about the role woodlot owners can play in the preservation and rehabilitation of these natural habitats.

Taking an Inventory of Your Woodlot - Jeff Muzzi, Renfrew County Forest Manager
One of the key elements of being a successful woodlot manager is knowing what resources you have to work with. Preparing an inventory of your forest is an important component of developing a management plan. This presentation will provide you with information about how to conduct an inventory of your woodlot.
