Welcome to...
The Haldimand & Area Woodlot Owners' Association a Chapter of the Ontario Woodlot Association
The Haldimand & Area Woodlot Owners’ Association (H&AWOA) was established in 1997. Haldimand County is where the waters of the Southern Grand River meet Lake Erie. www.haldimandcounty.on.ca.
Haldimand & Area Woodlot Owners work in co-operation with the Haldimand Stewardship Council. I n 2007, we became a Chapter of the OWA.
| Our Mission: |
- Encourage the development, improvement, and active management of private woodlots in Haldimand County.
- Assist in the distribution of ideas and information on woodlot operations, tours, in newsletters and on our website www.hawoa.com.
- Provide members with information on planting, windbreaks, harvesting, wildlife habitats, and rare and endangered species.
|
| Our Long Term Goal: |
| To increase the forest cover in Haldimand County and to establish corridors for wildlife. |
|
Past and Ongoing Projects:
Learning Events, Tours, Workshops, Connecting Wildlife Corridors, Tree Plantings, Seed Collecting, Seedling Give-A-Ways, White Pine Seedling Dig Ups, Growing Native Trees from Seed, White Pine Seed Orchard Management and many more!
Tree Plantings:
H&AWOA is one of the community groups involved with Trees Ontario. From 2008 to 2010, 143.4 acres have been planted with 109,689 native tree and shrub seedlings and 20,880 nuts on 18 properties within Haldimand County. Each year, new H&AWOA members’ properties are chosen for plantings. Creating wildlife corridors and riparian areas are always top reasons for site selection. Haldimand and Area Wildlife Corridor plantings were started in 2004. We now have a partnership between H&AWOA, Haldimand Stewardship Council, Canada Ontario Agreement, OPG, Trees Ontario Foundation, Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority & Trees Unlimited.
White Pine Seed Orchard:
H&AWOA has an agreement with Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to care for the White Pine Seed Orchard in Haldimand. The seed orchard was established by MNR in 1986 and managed until 1996. In 2003, H&AWOA approached the MNR about the orchard. It is now managed co-operatively between MNR Guelph District, the Forest Gene Conservation Association, the MNR Tree Seed Plant and the H&AWOA. One year we harvested 83.2 hl of pine cone seeds. That’s 3.5 million seeds! Find out more about the White Pine Seed Orchard on our website.
