OWA members, Kevin Hansen and woodlot owner Dolf Harmsen, stand on the log landing with the results of a first thinning of a spruce plantation.
Our main focus is forest education and we carry this out in several ways.
For a number of years, with the help of the Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Stewardship Councils, the Limestone Chapter has organized a lecture series. Guest speakers have presented a wide variety of forest related topics including managed forest certification, use of geographic information systems (GIS) in forest analysis and forest gene conservation.
For those members who prefer to “learn by doing”, we organize field days in members’ woodlots where we can carry out tree planting, identification and marking as well as learn how to apply forest management techniques. These are always great social events, as members share their experiences and love of the woods in the great outdoors.
The Limestone Chapter partners with other groups to put on larger events such as the Forest Fest involving Stewardship Councils, Upper Canada Woods Co-op and the Quinte Chapter of the OWA. Eighty people attended the event in 2006 in spite of inclement weather.
We always welcome new members and would be happy to add you to our newsletter mailing list.
